World maps are classified to acquire different types global knowledge
required to construct them. Before the European Renaissance, a
meaningful map of the world could not be constructed as less than half
of the earth’s coastlines, not to mention its inside regions, were known
to any culture. World maps are generally focused on political and
physical features.
Political maps emphasize national and regional boundaries and
human settlement. Physical maps demonstrate features like: mountains,
soil type or land use. Geological maps demonstrate the surface, as well
as characteristics of the hidden rock, fault lines, and subsurface
structures.
